RuPaul banned a drag queen’s period-themed dress because it was in ‘bad taste’
FOR THOSE OF you who have ever tuned into an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, you’ll know that they do not shy away from the shocking – in fact they embrace it.

The premise of the show is to push boundaries and overcome stereotypes, however, a decision made by the show’s star in the most recent season is facing criticism for seemingly flying in the face of what it says it stands for.
Creating looks for this week’s runway theme ‘Swerves and Curves’, one contestant suffered a set-back when head judge RuPaul deemed her look to be in “bad taste”.
Manila Luzon took to the runway in a Chanel-inspired pink padded gown that received huge praise from the panel of judges, however, she revealed on Instagram that the pink number wasn’t the look she planned on wearing.

“Ru said my ORIGINAL Curves and Swerves Runway look was in ‘bad taste’ and production told me to wear my back up,” Manila revealed online.
The look consisted of a corset made of a giant sanitary pad stained with fake blood and a large red skirt and was created by designer Dallas Coulter.
“I was really looking forward to wearing this gown that I think celebrates a perfectly normal human experience,” Manila added.
“Many of my fans are young women who may feel pressured by society to be embarrassed by periods. It’s empowering to teach young women about their bodies, encourage them to celebrate them AND to question people who tell them not to!
“My goal with this look was to normalise menstruation by looking sick’ning even if I was on my period.”
There was no mention of the decision to ban Manila’s period-inspired gown in the episode but her post has stirred up some major criticism for the show.
While viewers praised both looks, they criticised the show’s hypocritical decision to censor Manila’s look despite having allowed some genuinely shocking looks make it to the runway over the years.
Many fans have taken to Twitter to share their disappointment in the decision.
Whoops!

RuPaul or the production team on the show have yet to respond to Manila’s claim that she wasn’t allowed wear the dress but seeing as the show has received and ignored criticism like this before, we don’t think we’ll be hearing anything from them on the issue.
